Fifth Specialized Course on Physical Literacy Assessment for Children Successfully Held

According to the Public Relations of the Sports Sciences Research Institute, Dr. Saleh Rafiei, faculty member of the Institute and course director, stated in an interview that the fifth specialized course on Physical Literacy Assessment for Children was successfully held from 2nd to 5th November 2023. The course, which was specifically designed for students and graduates of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, as well as children’s game and sports coaches, saw an overwhelming response. The course took place in three days of online, non-residential training and one day of practical in-person training.

Dr. Rafiei explained that on the first day, three international standard tests were taught, including the Canadian Physical Literacy Assessment (CAPL-2) for children aged 8 to 12, focusing on assessing physical literacy across four domains: daily behavior, physical competence (physical fitness), knowledge and understanding, and motivation and self-confidence.

On the second day, the course covered the Physical Literacy Assessment for Youth (PLAY) tests, which include various sub-tests such as PLAY fun, PLAY self, PLAY basic, PLAY coach, PLAY parent, and PLAY inventory.

On the third day, the Passport For Life test was introduced, a school-based test that spans from 1st grade to 12th grade. This test evaluates various aspects, including physical fitness skills, motor skills, active participation, and life skills. The test is structured in three phases—the first three are game-based, while the later stages involve field tests.

Dr. Rafiei further mentioned that on the fourth and final day, all the theoretical tests taught earlier were practically applied in a sports hall, where any questions or difficulties were addressed.

The instructors of this course included Dr. Saleh Rafiei (Institute faculty member and President of the Children’s Sports and Physical Activity Development Association), Saeed Valadi (Head of the Physical Literacy Committee of the Children’s Sports and Physical Activity Development Association and Ambassador of the International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA)), and Dr. Fatemeh Sabzevari (Faculty member at Islamic Azad University, Sirjan).
