University of Guilan’s Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences Advances in Shanghai 2024 Global Rankings

The Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Guilan has made significant progress in the 2024 Shanghai Global Rankings for sport science faculties and departments, rising to the 151-200 range.

This achievement, announced by the Public Relations Office of SSRII and reported via the University of Guilan’s official portal, marks a notable advancement from its previous position in the 201-300 range in 2023 and 2017.

Other Iranian institutions, including the sport science faculties at Kharazmi University, Isfahan University, University of Tehran, and the Central Tehran Branch of Islamic Azad University, were ranked in the 201-300 range.

Regional and Global Comparisons In West Asia, Qatar University’s Department of Sport Science emerged as the highest-ranking institution, placed in the 101-150 range, surpassing its regional counterparts. Globally, the top three positions were secured by the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Deakin University (Australia), the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, and the Department of Nutrition, Exercise, and Sports at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark).

Understanding the Shanghai Ranking Methodology The Shanghai Ranking system, first introduced in 2016, applies a specialized methodology to evaluate over 300 institutions with dedicated units in sport sciences. Unlike broader university rankings, this system provides a focused comparison among sport-related institutions.

The rankings are based on comprehensive bibliometric measures, including:

• Volume of academic publications

• Citation impact and citations per publication

• Publications in the top 25% of academic journals

• Collaborative international publications

The bibliometric data is sourced from the Web of Science database, covering a five-year period.

The Shanghai 2024 rankings highlight the growing influence of Iranian universities in sport sciences on the global stage while showcasing institutions that lead in research, innovation, and academic excellence worldwide.
